As we are nearing, if not already past, the UK tomato season, Sarah in LS8 has added honeycomb tomatoes to her offering for next week.
“These tomatoes have been grown under cover in one of our four polytunnels.”
Tomatoes don’t like cold and without protection will only really grow in the UK from June to September-ish. Outside of these months, the majority of tomatoes you see for sale in shops will be coming from Spain or cheaper nations like Morocco then flown in via aeroplane. Sometimes they’ll even be grown in heated polytunnels in the UK, which depending on the time of the year means they can have a high carbon print compared to arriving on a plane. All of our foreign tomatoes will only ever come from the Netherlands or Spain via road.
Sarah went on to say, “tomatoes need a lot of sun and heat to ripen and I had just about given up on these tomatoes but this Indian summer has pushed them on and helped them ripen. They’ll taste best at room temperature!” Sarah’s honeycomb tomatoes are available as an add on via the button below.
This week we’ve got some fantastic Spanish avocados on their way to you. Confusingly named the bacon avocado (the variety was actually developed by a guy called James Bacon), this smooth skinned variety is delicate with a light flavour. They were originally developed in California but now grown in autumn in Spain. I’ve ordered a good amount of these for next week and they are excellent value at £1.50 per avo, so get them added to your basket using the button below!
As we all retire more and more to our sofas for autumn, there's nothing quite like a warming caffeine free tea to help you switch off and relax into the evening. Next week there is 20% off Good & Proper’s chamomile tea. Good & Proper are a B-Corp, women owned company who take sustainability seriously. They pay a fair price to all their producers, well above fairtrade, they are completely plastic free and their warehouse is powered by renewable energy.
In some boxes next week and available as an add on, you’ll find Tender Greens. Tender greens are actually young spring greens. They are picked before maturity to give them a much lighter feel compared to hardy spring greens. Next week our tender greens will be coming from Royal Oak Organics in Lancashire.
