Hello
Hope you are all having a great week.
Looking over next week’s boxes, pretty much everything in the boxes has moved over from Europe to the UK which is nice to see. Things like carrots, beans, celery, cucumbers and tomatoes are all now grown in the UK after relying on Europe for quite a while.
Most of the European veggies in boxes next week need a lot of heat to grow and are much more readily available in places like Spain than here in the UK even at the peak of our summer (peppers, sweet potatoes, fruit etc). I do remember Meanwood attempting to grow peppers a few years back but could never get them past very small green peppers, they came out more like padrons than red bell peppers!
The British celery looked good last week so that’s back in a few boxes this week. French green beans return from Suffolk, these were lovely two weeks ago and I received lots of lovely feedback on these. It never ceases to amaze me how many people opt to skip these!
The Valls family are back for a new season of amazing Cal Valls onions from Catalan. This week and next week boxes featured babosa onions which are a new season, fresh, semi dried onion. They are much easier to peel and have a slightly sweeter flavour than standard onions. The consistency of their onions is unreal, year after year they provide us with some lovely onions, the base to almost all meals!
It’s a good week for Yorkshire grown produce next week. We’ve got spring onions and kale coming from North Yorkshire along with the first cucumbers of the year and some french beans coming out of Leeds by Passion4Plants, that'a along with their usual bay leaves, micro greens and pea shoots and oyster mushrooms from Yorkshire Mushroom Emporium.
Fruit next week includes two types of pears (one from Spain, ercolini and one from France, gyuot), Juliet apples, apricots and mini watermelons.
Have a great weekend.
Thanks
Sam
