Hello

Hope you’ve had a good week!

There are Spanish farmers strikes around Madrid so some of the cut off times for Spanish suppliers have been moved forward this week to try to avoid disruption. Hopefully this will work but the situation on the continent appears to be fairly volatile at the moment.

There was also a small demonstration closer to home in Dover last Friday which has the potential to grow into something bigger proving that farmers across the board are unhappy with the way current things stand.

The above article quotes a farmer saying ‘as for the supermarkets selling British produce cheaper than the cost of production, shame on you.’ This certainly isn’t the case with any of the farmers we work with!
To give you an example - Tesco this week are selling 1kg of carrots for £0.65, I paid wholesale £1.17 per kilo, just shy of double the price that Tesco are selling to the public. Of this £1.17, the wholesale takes 15% and the farmers get £0.99. So I would guess that our wholesaler is paying them approximately 3 or 4 times what Tesco would be paying a farmer in the above example

Next week’s there is a good selection of UK produce as well as a bit of continental fruit and veg which will hopefully all arrive.

Leeds Bread Co-op have a new special which is their raisin and walnut sourdough.

Passion4Plants have better numbers of pea shoots next week as well as plenty of bay leaves, micro greens and one portion of kale.

Highlights from the boxes should include;

  • Lane late oranges from Gospa Citrus near Seville. These are late oranges but normally tend to be very good.
  • Punnets of mixed colour cherry tomatoes from Spain.
  • Two brand new apples (to me at least), inored from Italy and natyra from the UK.
  • Kalette tops from Lancashire.
  • Non hearted January King cabbages also from Lancashire.
  • And leeks from Polybell Farm in Doncaster are back (my favourite leeks).

Have a fantastic weekend.
Thanks
Sam
